SCI Services

Some have asked about SCI’s non-traditional pairing of a literary agency and editorial agency within the same company. As you can imagine, we maintain strong ethical boundaries between the two agencies. But the combination has proven to be a win-win for authors and publishers alike.

For Publishers

For Organizations

For Authors

The editorial services agency of Sanford Communications, Inc., can provide the following services to authors (D to H after we sign a Collaboration Agreement) or recommend another editorial services agency that’s well suited for your project:

(A) identify the author’s core messages

(B) explore the author’s ideas for new books (and other products, as applicable)

(C) select which of the author’s ideas he or she should actively pursue

(D) conduct marketability research to evaluate competing and complementary works already onthe market

(E) edit, revise, and reshape the author’s book proposal

(F) edit, revise, and reshape two or three of the author’s sample chapters

(G) send out the proposal and sample chapters to a carefully selected ad hoc editorial review committee

(H) make final changes to the documents

SCI’s literary agency can provide the following services to authors (after we sign a Literary Agreement):

(I) query prospective publishers about book project (typically one publisher at a time)

(J) identify an interested publisher

(K) pre-sell book project to the appropriate acquisition editor, et al.

(L) submit the proposal and sample chapters

(M) win the acquisition editor’s support

(N) win the editorial committee’s vote of approval

(O) win the publishing board’s vote of approval

(P) secure a financial offer

(Q) negotiate a full Deal Points Memo

(R) complete the author questionnaire and related requirements

(S) negotiate the contractual agreement

(T) secure a fully executed contract

(U) secure the first royalty advance payment

(V) help establish a plan for writing the final, polished manuscript

(W) coach author as he or she writes, edits, and tests eachchapter and front and back matter

(X) review and approve the manuscript prior to submission (some authors also hire us to edit their finished manuscripts)

(Y) secure publisher approval of the manuscript and a second royalty advance payment

(Z) help author and the publisher establish a plan for the next 15 to 20 steps that need to be taken before the book is available for sale and author is ready to start doing media interviews and promotion.

Ultimately, we have a passion to “think beyond the book!” So, we love to help our authors plan and implement integrated strategies to maximize their speaking events, media interviews, Internet downloads, and sales.
